The Athenian Edge

Triple Nexus Framework

The Athenian Edge Framework is a practical approach to designing finance and policy solutions across the gender–climate–peace nexus. Drawing on a 10-year regression analysis of data across more than 100 countries, and case studies spanning 12 dimensions of climate change—from energy and water to infrastructure—the framework demonstrates how gender equality can become a core driver of climate security.

The framework is structured around three concentric circles, drawing on established global approaches to climate action, the war–peace continuum, and the four pillars of the Women, Peace, and Security agenda. It is further complemented by two strategic axes—finance and policy—which define the power dynamics shaping climate security outcomes.

Together, these elements provide practitioners with clear pathways for action, grounded in real-world examples and adaptable to the specific political, economic, and security context in which a country operates. The book equips readers with real-life case studies on each of the 12 dimensions of climate security: energy, manufacturing, transportation, food, water, habitat, early warning, recent shocks, infrastructure, social, economic, and governance.

Cases represent geographic diversity with representation from both the Global North and South, demonstrating the wide applicability of the Athenian Edge framework and underpinning thesis.
